Partial dentures, also called βremovable partial denture prosthesesβ or βpartialsβ, are used when a few teeth are missing or when the remaining natural teeth are not strong enough to hold a bridge. Partial dentures preserve the remaining teeth and prevent them from shifting into the leftover space.
Partial dentures consist of prosthetic teeth affixed to acrylic bases that resemble gums. The dentures may incorporate a metal framework and clasps that connect to your remaining teeth for retention.
We offer three types of partial dentures:
1. Cast partial dentures, also known as chromium cobalt frame dentures, are made of a metal framework and acrylic resin teeth. They are durable and rigid, allowing for the easy addition of more teeth in the future. The chromium cobalt frame holds the fabricated teeth in place, while metal clasps fit over the remaining natural teeth to secure the device.
2. Acrylic partial dentures consist of the denture teeth attached to an acrylic base plate. They provide good stability and retention due to the denture fitting closely and tightly against the gums and natural teeth and using wrought metal clasps (retainers) to grip the teeth.
3. Flexible partial dentures are made from a thermoplastic material designed to replace a single tooth or a few teeth rather than a complete set. Rather than showing metal clasps, they are more aesthetically pleasing due to their clear/light pink colour flexible clasps.

Try and avoid foods that are extremely sticky or hard when wearing your partial dentures. Be careful when eating foods like hard meats, firm fruits and vegetables or candies and gum. You may even want to avoid some of these items during the adjustment period. We advise if you are eating hard food to cut it into smaller pieces.
It is very important that you wear your denture every day. If you donβt wear your partial denture for an extended period of time, it may not fit as well as it should. Over time, your mouth will change. The bone and gum areas may shrink or recede, causing the space between the jaws to change.
In Ontario, the cost of partial dentures typically falls within a range, with factors such as the number of teeth being replaced, the materials used, and depending on individual needs and preferences influencing the final price. On average, partial dentures in Ontario can range from $900 to $2,000 per arch.

Fortunately, with metal and acrylic partial dentures, it is usually pretty simple to repair cracks and plastic pieces that may break off over time. Even if a metal clasp breaks, a denturist can fix it by embedding wire into the denture base and clipping it around a tooth.
